This He-Man (Wonder Bread) toy was added on December 2023 and originally released in 1981. It may be harder to find this action figure as it's an exclusive to MailIn. This action figure is part of the Masters of the Universe genre within the Original series. With an average selling price of $1,208.33, this toy is not very valuable as it's selling for less than retail and is trending down. Only 13 of these items are in user collections, but since it is a vintage item that is 43 years old, it may be harder to find. AFA auctions are considered in determining the value of this item, potentially leading to a greater variance in the price range.
New evidence comes to light on a 35 year toy-mystery. The Wonder Bread He-Man's origin solved! by www.youtube.com
On Spectre Creative, we take a deep dive into one of the greatest toy mysteries - the Wonder Bread or Savage He-Man figure from the early '80s. This character made an appearance in the classics line as he was our first subscription-only figure decked out with black Zodiac armor, gun, and sword. The figure, named Wandar, has been a topic of mystery for years.
Upon exploring the origins of Wandar, evidence suggests that the character was not part of a Wonder Bread promotion, as it was previously speculated, but instead was part of a "buy three get one free" special edition promotion run in 1983 by Mattel. This inference comes from an old letter discovered from a disgruntled mother who wrote to the president of Mattel complaining about the mystery figure, describing it as a 'special edition He-Man' with no armor and very few weapons. The 'naked' He-Man figure received at that time matches the description of Wandar.
This finding solves the long-standing debate about whether Mattel made Wandar as a legitimate toy. The proof from the letter suggests the origins of Wandar lie in the special promotion by Mattel rather than a Wonder Bread promotion.
The Story Behind The RARE 1981 Savage He-Man (Wonder Bread) Action Figure by www.vintagetoyemporium.com
Back in 1983, Mattel introduced a buy 3 get 1 free scheme with their Masters of the Universe toy line. The offer was only for a limited period between Jan 2, 1982 and June 30, 1983, and entitled you to an unusual looking He-man figure, sometimes referred to as the Wonder Bread He-Man, due to an unverified fan theory suggesting link between Mattel and a Wonder Bread promotion. However, the figure was not part of any such promotion. It's speculated that this He-man figure was originally a prototype for Conan movie licensing. After Mattel decided to discontinue this and repaint the figure as He-Man due to the mature content of the movie, Conan Properties International went on to sue Mattel for copyright and trademark infringement. Thankfully, Mattel won the case; but this marked the end of Savage He-Man. Consequently, these figures have become rare and valuable, leading to an increase in counterfeit versions. To ascertain authenticity, look for 1981 marking on the figure's body and neck, uneven boot paint due to dipping process and a slightly uplifted neck as there's no headpin. Time to rummage through old toy boxes, you might be sitting on a goldmine!
