The Dewback came with several small, easily lost or broken accessories that are absolutely critical for a complete piece.
The Reins: This is the Holy Grail. The thin, white plastic reins were designed to fit over the sandtrooper's hands and the Dewback's bridle. Over the decades, this plastic has become brittle and snaps with the slightest pressure. It's extremely rare to find one that isn't broken, warped, or missing entirely.
The Bridle and Mouthpiece: The bridle is the piece that goes around the Dewback's snout, and the tiny rectangular mouthpiece fits inside it. These pieces are often missing. Without them, the reins have nothing to attach to, and the Dewback just doesn't look right.
The Saddle: While the main body of the saddle is durable, the two little pegs on the underside that connect it to the Dewback's back are extremely fragile. They are often snapped off, leaving the saddle to just rest on top of the creature rather than securely attaching.
The Creature's Condition:
Even without the accessories, the Dewback itself has a few common flaws to watch out for.
Tail Damage: The tail is a separate, soft-plastic piece that plugs into the body. The connector peg can break off, and the tail itself is prone to splitting or tearing at the seam.
Warped Legs: The legs of the Dewback, particularly the front ones, can be warped or bowed outward due to improper storage. This can make the creature wobbly or unable to stand properly.
Paint Rubs: The brown, painted details on the back and head are very susceptible to paint rubs, especially on the raised scales. A minty Dewback will have pristine paint.
Collector's Tip: When you're searching, always ask for close-up photos of the reins (if present), the saddle pegs, and the tail connection.
